Welcome to the Blue Aura Yoga blog. My name is Lukas Winterowd-Laughman, the founder and teacher at Blue Aura Yoga. This space is where I'll be sharing thoughts on yoga, meditation, breathwork, the obstacles we can encounter on our journeys, and how they can be dealt with.
My journey began way back when I was in my mother's womb. There was a car crash, and I
was badly hurt while still developing. My parents had faith I would survive full term and
did everything they could to keep me alive. Despite the womb being drained of most of the
amniotic fluid and the feeding tubes being badly damaged, I managed to be born with lungs.
Though I was a little small, weighing just over three pounds. As I grew up, there were
nearly countless health issues. I stopped growing when I was around 2 years old and had to
be put on artificial growth hormones. One health issue after another, half my childhood was
spent visiting doctors of various sorts. By the time I was 16, I had been formally diagnosed
with 14 separate chronic health conditions.
Most of these conditions had no
treatment, and none had a cure. Most treatment, including therapy, were insufficient,
leaving me barely functioning. However, at 18 years old, I came across a South Indian monk
named Sadhguru. He had free yoga videos online, teaching simple yoga practices. I had heard
about yoga, but thought it was just glorified stretching that women did. Over the years,
Sadhguru had taught me about the rich history and culture of yoga. How what we think of as
meditation and breathing practices actually originate from classical yoga. Buddha even
taught yoga to his monks and trained under various yoga teachers himself, and whole medical
systems and even martial arts were developed by these Indian monks called yogis.
But
the most important thing that he taught me was that a disease that is created by my body or
mind could be healed by my own body and mind. That is the reason none of the treatments I
had were working; the only person who could heal me was myself. So I practiced the
meditations and physical yoga Sadhguru taught for many years. As these years went on, my
conditions improved. My family, friends, and I were astonished. After seven years of
training, with help from other teachers, such as Wim Hof, I had only three conditions I was
still dealing with. Of those three, there was a 90% reduction in severity for me. So it is
no exaggeration to say yoga saved me and gave me a chance of having a normal life.
My
friends and family urged me to start teaching myself. So I began developing a system that
was authentic to my personal experience that would be practical for most people who are
living hectic and stressed lives. Thus Blue Aura Yoga was formed.
